Post 2 - Creativity

The idea of 'creativity' refers to the phenominon whereby a person creates something new (a product, a solution, a work of art etc.) that has some kind of value. What counts as "new" may be in reference to the individual creator, or to the society or domain within which the novelty occurs. What counts as "valuable" is similarly defined in a variety of ways.

Creativity is defined as the tendency to generate or recognize ideas, alternatives, or possibilities that may be useful in solving problems, communicating with others, and entertaining ourselves and others.

"The act of turning new and imaginitive ideas into reality" - Linda Naiman

We tested our creative abilities through the use of the game 'Consequences.' This game involves imagining scenarios which made up characters are part of, and a story is created through every player's contributions, by each player creating one part, e.g where the characters met, and then hiding this from the next player until the story is revealed at the end of the game.

A result of this was, 'Anne Widecombe met James May while collecting sea-urchines. He said, "Fancy going to get a knickerblockaglory?" She said "not on Sundays," and the consequences were they lived together by the sea with 63 cats.'

Another game which we played to explore our creativity was the same style, in terms of writing part of it, then hiding it and passing to the next person, but instead formed a very surreal and fairly random sentence.

Some examples of this are:

The beautiful bottle giggled at the dark woman.

I have also created an image of this sentence in order to show how words and ideas are translated into images, this is particularly relevant in the media industry when making films, TV programmes and publishing magazines and posters.

The massive donkey laughed at the Joker card.

The yellow rubber swims at the purple plum.

I think that these games expressed our creativity as a class as they allowed people to be as imaginitive as they like, and as the research suggests, imagination is the key to being creative.

In groups, we were given the brief to create a video which could not be edited, and had to include a pen. This was to see how creative we could be in teams, in a short period of time.

Here is a link to the videos which we produced and uploaded to YouTube.

I feel that I am quite a creative person as during my free time my friend Ben and I like to have competitions on Adobe Photoshop CS3 where we create an image based around one word, and see who can produce the best outcome.

Here are some examples of my work;

The theme for this image was 'Chuck Norris.'

The theme for this image was 'apples.'
The theme for this image was 'abstract.'

I also feel that I am a fairly creative person as I also have an interest in photography; I really enjoy putting artist twists into my photography work too.

These images were inspired by the 'Post-Secret' book of Art; a book of images where the public send in a postcard with a 'secret' or saying/phrase on it, accompanied by an image.

Here are two examples of my images.

I believe that 'creativity' isn't set and defined in one particular way; it can depend on who is defining it as each person's opinion is different, and what it is that is being defined as 'creative.' I also believe that creativity can have its benefits and drawbacks, for example, being creative can have its advantages in terms of being original and coming up with new inovative concepts, but it may also have its drawbacks in the media industry. Film makers must be careful when being 'creative' in their works, as too much creativity may leave the audience confused, but not enough creativity and the films may been seen as being too cliche'. Therefore, filmmakers must take into consideration the idea of being creative and original, verses being appropriate and audience recognisable (conventions) within their films.

Post 1 - Skills

A skill, is a learned capacity to carry out pre-determined results often with the minimum putlay of time, energy or both.

1. The ability, coming from one's knowledge, practice, aptitude, etc., to do something well: Carpentry was one of his many skills.
2. Competent excellence in performance; expertness; dexterity: The dancers performed with skill.
3. A craft, trade, or job requiring manual dexterity or special training in which a person has competence and experience.

My understanding of the term "skills" is that it describes how good or professional one is at something/ completes something and one can be skilled/ not so skilled in almost anything. I will use various different skills thoughout my media coursework in the near future, including pre-production skills, ICT skills and camera skills throughout the actual making of the short film. Additionally, I will also be using other skills at the planning stage of my coursework, including creative skills, listening skills and teamworking skills when brainstorming ideas and thinking of concepts.

There are also a wide variety of skills, and throughout this project, and through life really, I will be using Personal Learning and Thinking Skills or PLTS. These include team working skills, creative thinking skills, independant enquirey skills, reflective learning skills, self managing skills and effective participating skills, obviously using basic skills such as literacy and listening in the process.
