Our film has been influenced by the works of inspirational film makers which were around at the point of the French New Wave. These film makers include Jean-Luc Godard, taking inspiration from his films, 'Breathless,' and 'Une Femme est Une Femme.'
These films use, what was at the time, a completely new and experimental technique with the sound. Godard uses the technique of dropping the sound in and out of the footage in order to give the audience a sense of emotion.
Italian Neorealism:
This style has influenced the creation of our short film as we like their approach to some of the characteristics and style of film which is used. One of these is the fact that this technique doesn't use extras, but instead simply films who and what happens to be in the scene when the filming takes place. This is achieved by shooting exclusively on location. Another characteristic is that the subject matter of the films is usually something which the audience could relate to, such as life among the working class, realism and social issues.
Dogme 95:
Dogme 95 also have a style of their own as they follow several strict rules and principles when filmmaking: the film must hold traditional values of filmmaking in terms of acting, plot and technology. This includes banishing the idea of special effects or any other modern intricate technology.
These styles have influenced our film in terms of plot and subject matter as we are going to make a social-realism film which a British audience of a wide range of ages could relate to. This has also influenced our film as we wish to make our film look as naturalistic as possible, and therefore we would like to keep artificial lighting to a minimum. Finally, this has influenced our film as we will be using Godard's sound technique to portray the protagonist's thoughts and emotions.
