Post 18D - Evaluation - How Did You Use New Media Technologies in the Construction and Research, Planning and Evaluation Stages?

New Media Technologies Research

"New media technology is any type of application meant to transfer infrmation via digital techniques, computerised systems or data networks. First established in the 20th century, new media technology is most readily associated with information transfers meant to be manipulated in some way. Most forms of this technology are interactive and contain compressed data dsigned to be accessed in a variety of markets. The most prevalent examples of new media technologies include Internet-based concepts like websites or digital mediums such as CD-ROM's and DVD's. Anything that is considered old media, such as television, film or paper-based products, are not part of new media."

"The concept for new media technology got its start in the 1960s. With the rise of modern computer technology, the idea of information exchange through the medium became a powerful application. Artists and designers worked to bring new concepts to fruition such as digital-based artwork and video games. These technologies became highly prevalent in the 1980s, slowly replacing traditionally mediums, primarily through the implementation of personal computers and video game systems. This was also supported by desktop publishing methods that allowed for easier image manipulation techniques and online publications."

Put into my own words, this means that new media technologies are modern technologies used in the media industry to communicate. This is becoming more and more rapidly in the form of internet and digital visual mediums, such as Blogger and YouTube. New media technology is mostly interactive, so this means that the audience can become more and more involved in the media, for example on web forums, "sharing" links on social networking websites and citizen journalism.

New Media Technologies That I Used and How I Used Them:

Throughout the pre-production, production and post-production of all of my media products, I have used these examples of new media technology to aid the success of the outcomes of my products.

We used the high-quality camera and a tripod, along with the microphone to record the footage of our film. Once recorded, we then used the new media of Adobe Premier Pro to capture and edit our footage. If it wasn't for these new technologies such as Adobe Premier Pro and DivX, we would have had to do all of the editing manually like they did several years ago, involving slicing the film strips and putting them together by hand.

We used my Canon IXUS compact camera for a lot of the planning pre-production process, taking pictures of potential locations that we would use for filming in, and we used the Flip Camera to record audience feedback. Without this new media, we would have to record the feedback of our audiences using a much slower and less efficient and accurate method of writing down their quotes.

The use of Internet Explorer and new technologies found on the internet, including websites such as Google, Blogger and especially YouTube was extremely significant when producing our media product as they made the recording, researching and viewing process much easier and more effective. The internet is also one of the main ways nowadays that independent film companies market their films, for example 'Paranormal Activity', and so with these new technologies and digital distribution independant film companies would not be as successful as they are.

We have also used this method to distribute our short film as the QR codes, which are becoming more and more popular, link the audience straight to the YouTube video of our short film. Therefore, this is a free, easy and modern way of distributing our film, and without it our short film would not have as much exposure for audiences to make it popular as it does.

By uploading our short film to YouTube, this also enables our audience to 'share' it on social networking websites such as Twitter or Facebook, and this will also create a kind of word-of-mouth advertising and increase its popularity - something which was rare and much harder before the development of new media technology.
